Breed of the Week: Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a breed that holds a special place in my heart.  The elegance and beauty first attracted me to this breed and their gentle nature is what I look for in a dog.  I cannot wait until I can afford both the cost of a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and the up keep they require.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a strong muscular dog originating in the Swiss Alps.  This breed has been used for cart pulling, tracking, herding, guarding, search and rescue and now mostly companionship.  These dogs make wonderful natural guard dogs without the dominating personality of most guard breeds.  Bernese Mountain Dog’s are intelligent, hard working, loving dogs that will serve as a best friend for life.

Bernese Mountain Dog’s range from 23-28 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 80-120 pounds.  They have a long, wavy, waterproof coat that is always tri color (black, white and brown).   Daily brushing is recommended and Bernese Mountain Dog’s are heavy shedders.

As with most large breed dogs Bernese Mountain Dog’s are at risk of bloat and hip dysplasia.  The leading cause of death in Bernese Mountain Dog’s is cancer.  While the average lifespan is 6-8 years, some Berner’s have been known to pass away of cancer at a young age of 2 or 3 years old.
